Today's program provided a closer look in to the budget battle that is rocking Wisconsin. My exclusive guest this morning was Governor of Wisconsin, Scott Walker (R). I wanted to spend time getting the governor to explain his thought process for his 'budget repair bill.' If, like he says, this debate is only about the budget, why does he feel collective bargaining needs to be so limited. Plus, we discussed the endgame in all of this. If the 14 Wisconsin Senate democrats do not come back to Madison to vote on the bill, how does Governor Walker plan to tackle the issue?
You can watch my full interview with Governor Walker below.
Our roundtable discussed the budget battle in Wisconsin and it's impact for the 2012 campaign. I believe this puts President Obama in an awkward position. He needs to walk a fine line between supporting the unions (which he said he would do during the campaign), and focusing on the deficit and spending cuts. Democrats would like the president to stand strong in support of the unions, while conservatives and many independents believe he should not get wrapped up in this state issue. This could be a real issue for the independent voters come November 2012, and the president doesn't want to alienate any group.
It was an interesting round table with views from all angles. I was joined by former head of the RNC, Gov. Haley Barbour (R-MS); chairman of the Congressional Black Caucus, Rep. Emanuel Cleaver (D-MO); host of MSNBC's "The Last Word," Lawrence O'Donnell; president of the AFL-CIO, Richard Trumka; and editorial board member and columnist for the Wall Street Journal, Kim Strassel.
